Warre's Vintage Port, 1966

Vintage Port
Wine society bottling
Unlabelled

Warre's 1966 Vintage Port has a unique mineral-scented character that gives the port its own complexity and style.

Reviews for 1966 Warre's Vintage Port

91 points Wine Spectator
There is still plenty of fresh, youthful fruit here. Medium ruby-red, with an intense floral and berry nose, medium-bodied, with rich, sweet fruit flavors, medium tannins and a lingering finish. Very good fruit. (JS, Web Only—1998)

Jancis Robinson
Deep, vibrant ruby with very pale rim. Big, broad, rich nose – quite burly and autumnal. More powerful than the 1963 – with more obvious alcohol.

Chateau d'Yquem, 1965

Sauternes 1er Grand cru Classe

Yquem is indisputedly the best wine in Sauternes and may well be the finest sweet wine in the world.

A good wine. On the nose, bthere is some orange marmalade, honey and spice character in this wine. Turns quite woody, with lots of caramel.

YQUEM NOTES: It was very cold from April to September which dashed hopes for good ripeness. The deluge in late September (100 mm in 8 days) was very worrying, but things changed all of a sudden. The rain stopped and it was finally warm. There were two fine passes from the 3rd to the 12th of October and a third from the 16th to the 20th, however it was difficult to find grapes with high enough sugar levels.

Taylor Fladgate, 1965

Late Bottled Vintage Port

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it.

Kopke, 1964

Boca, 1964

Conti Ermano Maggiora
Clearance Offer - Last ONE | Was £89 | Now £50

The wines Boca must be made from grapes coming within the company, from the following varieties in the proportion indicated below: Nebbiolo (Span): from 70% to 90%; Vespolina and Uva Rara (Bonarda Novarese) alone or in combination from 10% to 30%.

Boca is usually a firm bodied and well structured wine with a garnet-red colour. It gives aromas of violets and sweet spices, and notes of pomegranates on the finish.
The high levels of acidity are deemed its secret ingredient. This contributes to ageing potential, making it one of Italy's longest lived reds. The local high acid, granitic porphyry soil is thought to play a role here.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1964

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe
Level in Neck | Damaged Label
Clearance Offer | Was £795 | £295 ***

notes on 1964 Haut Brion
"... deep garnet core with a tawny rim. A light nose, touches of smoked wood, cedar, pain grille and soot. Nice definition but the fruit is all but dispensed with. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp acidity, nice tautness here, good depth but not complex. Fine tannins, dusty black fruit with hints of black olive towards the tobacco-tinged finish, that seems just a little sugary (chaptalized?) Certainly not a bad wine for the vintage more renowned on the Right Bank and it has held up well. Graceful and undemanding. Drink now. Tasted June 2009.

Janneau, 1964

Armagnac 1964 Vintage

The great vintages or millésimés of Janneau are the expression of a single year, most commonly of a single cask. Produced exclusively with the single distillation process, they are the quintessence of this precious distillate aged over the years. Each vintage expresses its unique character. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a sharp contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish.

Taylor Fladgate, 1963

Vintage Port
Unlabelled

Ruby highlights surviving in the colour. Deep, intense, Burgundian richness. At first the spirit is rather overpowering. Then dark chocolate starts appearing, followed by herbal, gum cistus, licorice, cigar box, leathery quality really comes through in the mouth and a slightly medicinal character. Medium length.

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades.
