Chateau Mouton Rothschild

mouton rothschildMuch of Mouton’s success is due to the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who assumed control in 1922. He was a dynamic figure who revolutionised much of the running of the estate. The first to introduce château-bottling, as early as 1924, he instigated the practice after the Second World War of employing a different artist each year to design the label. His greatest achievement was to have Mouton upgraded to 1st Growth Status in 1973, the only change ever to be made to the 1855 Classification.

The vineyard, comprising 75 hectares of mainly gravel-based soils, is planted with 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Grapes are hand-picked, and the juice is fermented in barrel - not in vat. After fermentation the wine is aged in new oak for 22 months before bottling.

In style the wines have immense appeal, with exotic, powerful aromas of cassis, minerals, tobacco leaf and graphite, backed by an opulence on the palate and impressive length on the finish. Chateau Mouton Rothschild has often produced the “wine of the vintage”.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 2001

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

"Lifted blackberry, autumn leaf, cedar and a touch of fresh tobacco, the mintiness enhanced by continued aeration. The palate is very tight and slightly pinched at the moment, the tannins a little harder and less fine than Lafite, the finish slightly chalky and foursquare in texture. Personally, I prefer the 2002 to the previous year, but it is still a decent, mid-weight Pauillac that would show better with cuisine. Drink 2013-2025. Tasted November 2010." Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1984

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

The 1984 Château Mouton Rothschild comes from a challenging vintage in Bordeaux. The weather in 1984 was generally cool and wet, which resulted in under-ripe fruit and a difficult growing season for most producers. As a First Growth estate, Château Mouton Rothschild is known for its ability to produce high-quality wines even in less favorable years and the 1984 is considered to be one of the vbest wines from the vintage. One unique aspect of each vintage of Mouton Rothschild is the label, which features artwork by a famous artist. In 1984, the label was designed by Italian artist Massimo Campigli, known for his figurative style that combines elements of ancient civilizations with modern abstraction.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1977

Pauillac, 1st Growth Classification
Top shoulder

At the invitation of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother spent three days at Mouton on the occasion of her official visit to Bordeaux in April 1977.

To commemorate the visit, and with her permission, Baron Philippe dedicated the 1977 Mouton Rothschild label to her as a personal tribute.

Despite the vintage this wine still has a majestic color and nose given its age. As with most Bordeaux from 1977, this is a tad past its prime but you can tell this was a wine of elegance. Very interesting flavors of earth, a little leather, and berries. a little short lived on the palate but very interesting.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1976

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (High-shoulder)

Mahogany core with deep brick rim. The nose is actually better than I anticipated with some dusty black fruits, cedar a touch of game, but it certainly lacks vigour and cohesion. The palate is a little tawdry, slightly hollow with an cooked character that jars against some obvious green berries that found themselves fermenting. Linear towards the dry finish, moderate length.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1969

Pauillac, 1er Grand Cru classe
High Shoulder

Lovely colour, mature but lively appearance; clean nose, lovely vinous warmth, cassis and cedar and mint, classic Pauillac; lovely and lively palate, cassis flavours, complete for a 1969, lively acidity in check; clean and dry finish, good length. Much better than the bottle from the same cellar tasted ten years ago. Rating applies to the first 15 minutes after opening, loses its definition very quickly after that.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1956

Pauillac, 1er Grand Cru classe
Slightly bin soiled label / High Shoulder

The 1956 Château Mouton Rothschild is more of a collector's item due to its rarity and age rather than its inherent quality as a wine. It represents a piece of Bordeaux history, particularly because of the challenges of the vintage. While it may not offer the power and complexity of better Mouton Rothschild vintages, it can still provide an intriguing glimpse into the past of one of the world's most famous wine estates.

The 1956 vintage in Bordeaux was challenging due to a severe frost that devastated many vineyards in the region. This frost significantly reduced yields, particularly affecting some of the vines at Mouton Rothschild.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1981

Paulliac 1er Cru Grand Classe
Top shoulder level

Arman label. From the good 1981 vintage, this lovely red wine has a spicy bouquet and a crisp fruity flavour with a long smooth finish.

Château Mouton-Rothschild’s exceptionally fine wine comes from the best vines on the ‘Plateau de Mouton’ that makes up 90 hectares of the property. In these vineyards, the roots push deep into gravelly soil. Since we’re in Pauillac, Cabernet Sauvignon is the grape that dominates the blend. Depending on the vintage, this can be up to 80%, and is completed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes are picked by hand and, once destemmed, are put into vats.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1971

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
high mid shoulder, glue-striped label

Reviews:
"It is ten years since I last encountered this ’71. It unexpectedly has a deeper colour than the ’70, the nose certainly more mature than before, forsaking that mint aroma for meatier, dried blood/ferrous notes. The palate is medium-bodied without the weight and depth of the ’70, but still quite fresh and well-defined at first, though a little “frayed” towards the leafy finish. Fine. Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1966

Pauillac 1st Growth Classification
Very top shoulder. Label bin soiled.

Robert Parker writes '... the dark garnet colour and classic sweet, spicy, tobacco, coffee, and black currant aromas are enticing. The wine still has powerful tannin in the finish, which contributes to the dry, austere character this example has always exhibited. One of the more intellectually-styled Moutons, the 1966 is a classic example of the vintage, as well as of the chateau's Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated style. Tasted 10/97 Bordeaux, 3rd Edition.
