Croft Port, 1960

Vintage Port
Plain label - embossed capsules.

"Bright tawny with orange flecks, there are whacks of dried fruit and sultanas on the nose, with hints of bitter chocolate and Christmas pudding. The palate is sweet but balanced with a lovely acidity. A fascinating multilayered wine, with the oxidization bringing out maple syrup flavours, coupled with leather and cigar box aromas wrapped around rich dried fruit. Complex, captivating and holding up beautifully." Decanter, Fine Wine Encounter 2009.

The 1960 has a light russet core with deep tawny rim. A lovely soft, mulberry infused nose with a touch of sloes and coca that could do with a tad more delineation.

Marcel Trepout, 1960

Marcel Trépout, Armagnac

The 1960 Armagnac from Marcel Trepout is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

Niepoort Port, 1957

Colheita Port

"A green rim with a tawny core, sediment too. A deep, spicy nose shows dried spice and fleshy tamarind. In the mouth, it’s very concentrated, spicy and lively, with liquorice and darker treacle toffee notes. There’s a trace of bitterness to its slightly spirity finish, but it’s deliciously spicy with plenty of vigour." Sarah Amhed, The Wine Detective

Chateau Montrose, 1955

St Estephe 2eme Cru Classe
High shoulder level

*** 95 Points Robert Parker (NM) ***

Reviews: "the 1955 Montrose is a legendary vintage for the estate. Certainly my solitary encounter several years ago was off the charts, a view since vindicated by others lucky enough to have encountered it. Certainly here, the 1955 had an amazing, deep, almost refulgent color with a thin tawny rim. The bouquet was very intense with dark berry fruit, bergamot, Earl Grey and even dried honey, unusually opulent for this normally quite foursquare vintage. The palate is swarthy and structured with great depth and balance. One or two commented upon the volatility of this wine and true, this upended the finish, blurring the edges.

Taylor Fladgate, 1955

Vintage Port
Excellent provenance

These bottles have been kept in perfect condition in a Cambridge college cellar since first release.

Taylors 1955 Vintage Port.
Review
The only vintage Taylor’s declared in the 1950s. According to the Fladgate Partnership, ‘one of the most underrated vintages of the century’. Taylor’s own two great vineyards in the Douro, Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. Both are categorised grade A - the highest possible rating. In years when Taylor’s produces a classic vintage, wines from these two estates are blended together. As they are some 20 miles apart, and subject to very different micro climates, they combine to produce a powerful, long lived and complex vintage port.

Madeira, 1948

MBV Malvesia Bott: Barbeito, Madeira
94 Points - Wine Advocate

Review" The rambunctious 1948 Malvasia has a far more resinous, fiery bouquet compared directly against the 1954. It demands a little more coaxing, but offers absorbing aromas of melted candle wax, smoked walnut, nutmeg and cumin. The palate has a lovely opening, with Schezhuan setting the tongue on fire, and then it glides towards its elegant conclusion of barley sugar, bitter orange, chocolate and lemongrass. The aftertaste is extraordinarily long, the tongue tingling a minute after the Madeira has exited. It is the kind of Madeira that needs to be kept on a leash!" Neil Martin, Wine Advocate 2012.

Chateau Margaux, 1947

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe
Vandermeulen bottled.
High Shoulder

Château Margaux 1947 is an outstandingly great wine, particularly powerful and still very fresh. The bouquet is intense and mellow, with very ripe fruit coming through. On the palate, the power of the tannins comes to the fore, leaving a slightly dry impression, which is quite typical of the wines of this generation. This type of wine was made for long ageing. It can be enjoyed now, of course, but it can be laid down without any problem for many more years.

Sandeman, 1935

Vintage Port, DOC Douro (OB)

From the excellent 1935 Vintage, Bottled to commemorate George V Jubilee. The port is tawny with some red in colour. Showing little on the nose, perhaps some hints of concentrated redcurrant. Smooth and concentrated on entry; full bodied and with good weight. Blossoms beautifully in the mouth, develops and grows. Explodes on the aftertaste with huge fruit flavours dominating - mature and sweet. Incredible finish! An astonishing wine. After 5½ hours in the glass this had even developed hints of tannins!
