    1950 Domaine Piétri-Géraud, Banyuls – Sweet Wine

A remarkable example of mature Vin Doux Naturel from the rugged coastal vineyards of Banyuls in Roussillon. Produced predominantly from old-vine Grenache Noir and fortified to preserve natural sweetness, this wine has spent decades evolving into a beautifully complex and harmonious dessert wine.

In the glass it shows a deep mahogany hue with amber edges. The nose is rich and evocative — raisins, fig, walnut, treacle and Christmas cake mingle with notes of candied orange peel, coffee and cocoa. The palate is full and luscious, yet still balanced by a gentle acidity that keeps it fresh. Layers of dried fruit, caramel and spice unfold slowly, leading to a long, warming finish with echoes of roasted nuts and burnt sugar.

Less spirity than an old Vintage Port, it displays extraordinary poise and depth for its age. A genuine piece of fortified wine history — sweet, mellow, and endlessly satisfying.

    Serving Suggestions
Serve lightly chilled, around 14–16 °C, to highlight its aromatic depth without muting the sweetness. Decant gently if there’s sediment, as older Banyuls can throw a light deposit.

Pairs beautifully with chocolate desserts, fig or date pudding, or tarte tatin. Excellent too with aged cheeses such as Comté or Manchego, or blue cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton, where the salt contrasts elegantly with the wine’s sweetness. For an indulgent touch, serve with dark chocolate truffles, toasted nuts, or even foie gras at the start of a meal.

Once opened, it will keep well for several weeks if re-corked and stored cool.

    Reviews

Banyuls is France’s answer to Port, but with a distinctly Mediterranean character. Made from Grenache Noir grown on dramatic seaside terraces in Roussillon, this fortified wine is rich yet fresh, brimming with flavours of blackberries, spice and cocoa.

Traditionally known as the ultimate partner for chocolate desserts, Banyuls also pairs beautifully with blue cheese, roasted nuts and spiced dishes – or simply enjoy it lightly chilled as an indulgent aperitif. For those who love Port, Madeira or Rivesaltes, Banyuls offers something both familiar and intriguingly different. A true discovery wine.
