1961 Domaine Parcé & Fils, Banyuls – Fortified Sweet Wine

A superbly mature Vin Doux Naturel from the Parcé family, long regarded as one of Banyuls’ most historic and respected producers. Crafted from Grenache Noir grown on the steep, schist terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, this 1961 vintage captures the depth, warmth, and sea-salted intensity that define great Banyuls.

After fortification to halt fermentation, the wine was aged oxidatively in old casks, allowing it to develop extraordinary richness and complexity over time.

In the glass it shows a deep amber-mahogany hue with glints of copper. The nose is wonderfully expressive — dried figs, dates, and sultanas mingle with toffee, caramelised orange peel, walnut, roasted coffee, and cocoa. There’s an elegant oxidative edge reminiscent of rancio, adding notes of old wood, spice, and antique varnish.

The palate is unctuous yet poised, combining sweetness and freshness with exceptional balance. Flavours of molasses, burnt sugar, prune, and nut brittle unfold into a long, warm, nutty finish that lingers beautifully. Mature, soulful, and deeply satisfying — a testament to the Parcé family’s craftsmanship and the longevity of the great Banyuls wines.

    Serving Suggestions
Serve slightly chilled (14–16 °C). Decant gently if there’s fine sediment.

Outstanding with dark chocolate desserts, fig or date pudding, or caramelised fruit tarts. Pairs beautifully with blue cheeses such as Stilton or Roquefort, or aged Comté and Manchego. Also delicious alongside toasted nuts, espresso, or even foie gras for a luxurious pairing.

Once opened, it keeps well for several weeks if re-corked and stored in a cool place.

    Reviews

Banyuls is France’s answer to Port, but with a distinctly Mediterranean character. Made from Grenache Noir grown on dramatic seaside terraces in Roussillon, this fortified wine is rich yet fresh, brimming with flavours of blackberries, spice and cocoa.

Traditionally known as the ultimate partner for chocolate desserts, Banyuls also pairs beautifully with blue cheese, roasted nuts and spiced dishes – or simply enjoy it lightly chilled as an indulgent aperitif. For those who love Port, Madeira or Rivesaltes, Banyuls offers something both familiar and intriguingly different. A true discovery wine.
