Description
This 1976 Barbaresco displays a brick-garnet core fading to a broad tawny rim, with light sediment typical of a wine at full maturity. The colour signals a wine that has evolved significantly, moving from its original vibrant core to the delicate, transparent nuances of fully developed Nebbiolo.
The nose is refined and tertiary, offering dried rose petals, pot-pourri and autumn leaves as dominant notes. Leather, cigar box, truffle, and earthy forest floor combine with subtle hints of dried red cherry, orange peel, balsamic lift, and a touch of menthol. There is a quiet complexity and elegance, though aromatic intensity is gentle and fragile.
On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied, with dried red fruit — cherry, cranberry, and strawberry — accompanied by savoury notes of leather, cedar, mushroom, and tobacco leaf. The tannins are soft, chalky, and fully integrated, while the acidity remains bright and linear, giving structure and lift to the delicate flavours. The texture emphasises finesse and transparency over power or concentration.
The finish is elegant and lingering, with echoes of dried roses, tar, gentle spice, and earthy undergrowth. Fully mature, this Barbaresco is at a fragile stage; the best bottles are hauntingly nuanced, while others may show signs of oxidation or dryness. Stand the bottle upright before opening, decant carefully to remove sediment, and serve lightly cool to highlight its perfume and subtlety.
