Description
1968 Barolo – Giuseppe Contratto (Piedmont)
The 1968 vintage in Piedmont produced classically structured wines with notable longevity, favouring balance and traditional ageing potential. Giuseppe Contratto, founded in 1867, is one of the region’s historic houses, long associated with a classical approach to winemaking rooted in extended ageing and respect for Nebbiolo’s natural perfume and structure.
Tasting Notes:
Now showing a mature brick-garnet hue with amber highlights at the rim, the nose is finely evolved and expressive. Aromas of dried cherry, rose petal and redcurrant are layered with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With time in the glass, subtle hints of truffle, cedarwood and warm spice emerge, adding depth and complexity. On the palate it is medium-bodied and harmonious, with softened tannins and a graceful thread of acidity that maintains balance. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and gentle balsamic nuances unfold gradually, leading to a long, elegant and contemplative finish.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. A natural partner to braised meats, truffle dishes, game or mature hard cheeses.
Summary:
A rare and characterful Barolo from a historic Piedmont producer, the 1968 Giuseppe Contratto offers mature complexity and classical Nebbiolo character shaped by decades of patient bottle ageing.
