Description
Barolo 1982 – Fontanafredda
The 1982 Barolo from Fontanafredda is a beautifully mature expression of Nebbiolo, now fully resolved and offering all the quiet confidence that only long cellar ageing can bring. The colour has softened to a translucent garnet with brick-tinged edges, immediately signalling its graceful evolution.
On the nose, the wine is wonderfully complex and layered. Dried rose petals, leather, tobacco leaf and truffle lead the way, followed by notes of sour cherry, cranberry compote, forest floor, and gently spiced cedar. Subtle hints of balsamic, anise and old wood add further depth and nuance.
The palate is elegant rather than powerful, with fine, silky tannins that have completely melted into the structure. Red cherry, dried strawberry and plum skin are supported by savoury notes of mushroom, tea leaf and gentle earthy spice. Acidity remains bright, giving the wine lift and freshness despite its age.
The finish is long, refined and harmonious, leaving lingering impressions of dried fruit, truffle and sweet tobacco. This is a Barolo that speaks of patience, tradition and classical Piedmontese winemaking at its best.
This mature Barolo pairs beautifully with classic Piedmont and autumnal dishes. Slow-braised beef, osso buco, venison and mushroom risotto are particularly well suited, while truffle-based dishes echo the wine’s earthy complexity. It also works superbly with roasted lamb or rich poultry dishes, and with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino.
A graceful, fully mature Barolo offering classic Nebbiolo aromatics, refined structure and long, savoury complexity. The 1982 Fontanafredda is a wonderful example of how well Barolo can age, delivering subtle power, balance and timeless charm for the collector or traditionalist.
