Description
Barros Port, 1974
Colheita Port
A beautifully mature Colheita Port, the 1974 Barros offers over five decades of careful cask ageing, resulting in a wine of exceptional elegance and depth. This vintage also carries historical significance, commemorating the Carnation Revolution of 1974 — a defining moment in Portuguese history when the country transitioned peacefully to democracy.
Tasting Notes
A rich amber colour with subtle reddish tones, the nose reveals layers of dried fruits, toasted nuts, caramel and spice, underpinned by delicate oak influence. The palate is smooth, complex and beautifully balanced, combining sweetness with freshness. A long, refined finish lingers with notes of toffee, nuts and gentle spice.
Serving & Food Pairing
Colheita Ports are ready to drink and do not require decanting. Best served slightly chilled at 12–13°C, it pairs exceptionally well with desserts such as crème brûlée, treacle tart or nut-based dishes including hazelnut praline. Once opened, store in the fridge and enjoy within three months.
Producer
Barros, founded in 1913, is one of Portugal’s most respected Port houses, known for its expertise in aged Tawny and Colheita Ports. The wines are matured for extended periods in seasoned oak casks, allowing them to develop remarkable complexity and character over time.

Silver Medal Decanter 2022 - 93 Points
A powerful and concentrated wine toasted fruit aromas, a woody character and a lovely, fresh palate. Long, savoury, coffee-filled finish. For fans of the style.

The 1974 Colheita Tawny Port "Special Edition" was bottled in 2015 with 117.9 grams per liter of residual sugar. This "Special Edition" is so-called because it "celebrates the Portuguese revolution of 25th April 1974. The launch was in 2014 but we are keeping it on the market, bottling on demand," PR Director Tânia Oliveira said. Consistent with what I've seen from Barros, this is a very elegant Tawny, not flaunting concentration in the mid-palate, but showing off increasing intensity of flavor as it sits in the glass. It is amazingly graceful for a wine this old, but it is still reasonably gripping on the finish, showing fine tension and some pure power as well. Its bright and sunny demeanor gives it a feeling of liveliness that many do not have at this age. It is exceptionally easy to drink, if perhaps a bit too understated for its age, but it is more interesting as you sit with it.
