  • Description

Blandy's Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine for over 200 years. The Blandys are unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company. The family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine throughout its long history and members of the family continue to live on Madeira, maintaining a tradition that goes back to 1811.

The Blandy’s 2009 Verdelho Colheita was aged in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the wine is gently heated by warm air in the lofts of the company’s south-facing lodge in Funchal. Over the years the casks are transferred from the top floor to the middle floor and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. The wine is regularly racked during the ageing process and is finally bottled when the desired balance of maturity is reached. The Verdelho grapes were predominantly sourced from Santo do Porto Moniz and Raposeira on the north coast of the island. The wines were then aged for 13 years in 650cl cask at the Blandy’s lodge in Funchal. Just 2,600 75cl bottles have been released.

    Tasting Notes
Brilliant crystalline topaz color, with golden highlights. On the nose it is intense with notes of spice, dried fruit, and some complex iodine notes. Medium dry, fresh and vibrant, rich in saline and spices. A lingering aftertaste of brandy and dried fruits.

    Cellarage & Serving
This wine should be stored upright in a dark room with constant temperature, ideally no higher than 16ºC. Decanting is not necessary, but will help remove any deposit that may have occurred in bottle over time. It has been bottled ready for drinking and will keep for several months after opening. Enjoy slightly chilled on its own or paired with appetizers during a meal.

“Showing [a] little more spirit on the nose and softer and a touch sweeter on the palate (70g/l residual sugar), lovely savoury complexity on the finish.
However my own preference is for the slightly drier Cossart Gordon style which seems more incisive”.
