  • Description

The 1955 Toro Albalá Don PX Convento Selección is a remarkable vintage Pedro Ximénez from Montilla-Moriles, representing one of the most distinguished expressions of long-aged sweet wine in Spain. Harvested in 1955 and aged in seasoned oak casks for over six decades, this extraordinary wine reflects the dedication to traditional solera ageing and the meticulous winemaking practices that define Toro Albalá’s legacy.

Crafted exclusively from sun-dried Pedro Ximénez grapes, this wine showcases the richness and intensity that are hallmarks of the style. Its deep mahogany hue with glints of greenish gold at the rim speaks to its extensive maturation. The bouquet is intensely aromatic and layered, offering complex notes of caramelised orange peel, beeswax, dried figs, golden sultanas, and chamomile, underpinned by hints of aged balsamic, tobacco leaf, and toasted almond.

On the palate, it is profoundly unctuous yet impeccably balanced, with a silken texture lifted by a surprising freshness. Flavours of molasses, date syrup, lemon toffee, walnut brittle, and dark honey unfold with seamless depth. Subtle savoury tones and a whisper of salinity provide contrast and structure, leading to a seemingly endless finish marked by salted caramel, preserved citrus, and spiced fruitcake.

While incredibly concentrated, the wine maintains harmony and elegance, revealing new facets with every sip. It is both a meditation wine and a powerful expression of historical viticulture—an unforgettable experience for the seasoned collector or those discovering the heights to which PX can ascend.

Presented in a 20cl bottle within a luxury gift box, this wine is best served lightly chilled (12–14°C) and makes an exquisite pairing with blue cheeses, roasted nuts, rich desserts such as sticky toffee pudding or chocolate tart, and even dark-roast coffee. Its fortified nature and oxidative style mean it will remain stable for months after opening when stored in cool, dark conditions.

The Don PX Convento Selección 1955 is not merely a wine but a vinous relic—an embodiment of time, patience, and artisanal mastery. Awarded 98 points by Robert Parker, it stands among the finest old PX wines ever produced.

98 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate
One more single-harvest, old sweet wine, the 1955 Don PX Convento Selección was bottled in September 2014 and it had been aged slowly in very old American oak barrels and getting thick and concentrated through evaporation. It's 320 grams of sugar are (partially) compensated by 6.5 grams of acidity. It has a nose and palate of chocolate-covered candied orange, spices, molasses. I'd say the dominant aromas in the nose are dark chocolate. It's very dense, developing notes of very concentrated licorice and balsamic, mint, camphor and evolving notes of petrol with time. Complex, rare and unique. 8,400 bottles. Drink Now to 2028
