A 2012 Vintage Port Wine from Burmester Port.

The vineyard of Quinta do Arnozelo is situated on the southern bank of the Douro river, between the small towns of São João da Pesqueira and Vila Nova de Foz Côa. This is in the prestigious upper reaches of the Douro demarcated wine region, the aptly named Douro Superior. In addition to its favourable geographic location, it has an ideal micro-climate, both of which contribute to the superior quality of its grapes and other produce. The vineyard has 200ha, comprised of vines, olive trees, orange trees and forest (which harbours a large variety of the region’s species).

    Tasting Notes
Red and black fruit in the aroma, with much youth, blackberry compote. Very attractive in the mouth, elegant and with a beautiful presence, it proves very lively and fresh with citrus notes to mark presence. Drink from 2022- 2050

    Food Pairing
The association of Vintage Port with a mature blue cheese such as Stilton is one of the great classic food and wine combinations. The soft buttery texture, mellow character and piquancy of the cheese are perfectly matched by the powerfully majestic flavours of the Vintage Port. Other blue, buttery, mellow and slight piquant cheeses to consider would be: Cashel Blue, Roquefort, Gorgonzola and Saint Agur Blue.

    ***89 Points Wine Advocate***
The 2012 Quinta do Arnozelo is a single-quinta Port bottled in July, 2014. A 50/50 blend of Touriga Nacional (50%) and Touriga Franca (50%) sourced from vines over 25 years of age, it comes in at 88 grams per liter of residual sugar. Showing reasonably good concentration in the context of the year, and notably more, say, than its Sogevinus sibling, the Barros in this issue, this opens tightly wound, lush and bursting with fruit, sugar and power. The sweet and juicy finish makes it very appealing on first sips, but the serious power underneath really mandates that this have some time in the cellar. As it loses some lushness, the power comes to the fore and the next day rather dominates this wine. The mid-palate seems a bit slighter. It should age reasonably well and acquire more complexity with age. It may yet demonstrate enough to merit a small uptick, but the intensity is more impressive than the fruit just now. Overall, it is a nice effort in the vintage. Mark Squires- Wine Advocate 2015.
