Exclusive to Vintage Wine and Port
The 2020 Calem Vintage Port presents an intense purple colour, the aromas are marked by blackberries that are complemented by notes of forest fruits, dark chocolate, pepper and slightly more resinous notes. Concentrated and intense, this is an irreverent and generous wine, with very firm tannins, suggesting great ageing potential. A Vintage that is “robust, full-bodied and vibrant”,
The harvest was small in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic and extreme weather conditions. Production was hampered from May onwards as the weather turned very dry and hot, resulting in scorched vineyards. Consequently, the overall production levels were considerably lower than in 2019; however, the harvested grapes had an excellent skin/pulp ratio and a high sugar content, which allowed for longer fermentations, with perfect extraction of colour and tannins.
Carlos Alves, master blender & port wine winemaker, said: “The harvest was marked by a series of adversities that made this one of the most challenging years in my career.
“Despite the adversity, this was a vintage that exceeded all expectations, and from which we believe we have produced wines of excellent quality, with very refined tannins, displaying a certain elegance in the wines.”

The origins of the Cálem vineyards is the Pinhão region in the heart of the best Port vineyards. This Port with its ripe berry fruits and a fine balance between sweetness and dryness, has a luscious character. It is rich and will certainly age. Drink from 2029. — Roger Voss

Cask sample- 25/7/2022
Touriga Franca 45%, Touriga Nacional 20%, Tinta Roriz 20%, Sousão 15%. TA 6.5 g/l, pH 3.2, RS 106 g/l.
Very dark, black core with narrow purple rim. Much more focused on the dark fruit, less red-fruit character than the Kopke 2020, with less immediate oak aroma but also more closed and savoury, an attractive dusty impression. Dark, restrained and chewy on the palate and yet with real elegance in the tannins, which are fine and many-layered. The sweetness less to the fore, though of course it is very sweet. The freshness is there but is less striking than on the Kopke, perhaps better integrated at this stage. Deep and long and extremely embryonic. Terrific length. (JH)
