Description

Nestled in the northern part of the Médoc, Château Cos d’Estournel is a legendary 2ème Cru Classé estate famed for its opulent, exotic-styled Saint-Estèphes. Established in 1811, the château is renowned for producing wines that balance power and elegance, with signature richness, spice, and longevity—a true icon of Bordeaux.

Appearance
Deep garnet with a hint of brick at the rim, reflecting over two decades of graceful ageing.

Nose
A complex bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum melds with notes of cedar, graphite, cigar box, leather, and subtle exotic spices. Hints of truffle and undergrowth speak to its evolution and terroir expression.

Palate
Full-bodied, rich, and remarkably polished for its age. Fine-grained tannins are perfectly integrated, supporting layers of dark fruit, licorice, espresso, and mineral nuances. Despite its maturity, the wine retains vibrancy and structure, a hallmark of Cos d’Estournel.

Finish
Long, persistent, and silky, with a refined, lingering mineral edge and elegant, spicy resonance.

The 1996 Château Cos d’Estournel is a stunning example of Saint-Estèphe ageing gracefully. Ready to enjoy now, it pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef, game, and mature cheeses. This is a wine that rewards both immediate tasting and contemplative appreciation—a historic Bordeaux classic.

Château Cos d'Estournel is a prestigious wine estate located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France. Established in the early 19th century by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, the estate is renowned for its grand architectural style, including the iconic pagodas that distinguish its winery. Covering approximately 100 hectares, the vineyard benefits from a unique terroir of gravel and clay soils, ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Château Cos d'Estournel consistently produces exceptional Second Growth (Deuxième Cru) wines, as classified in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, known for their power, elegance, and remarkable aging potential. The wines are celebrated for their rich, layered flavors of dark fruit, spices, and subtle earthy notes, making Château Cos d'Estournel a benchmark for quality and sophistication in Bordeaux winemaking.

Reviews

"Made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, this is a huge, backward wine. The 1996 possesses an opaque purple colour, as well as pure aromatics consisting of cassis, grilled herbs, coffee, and toasty new oak. Massive in the mouth, and one of the most structured and concentrated young Cos d'Estournels I have ever tasted, this thick, structured, tannic wine has closed down significantly since bottling. It requires 7-8 years of cellaring, and should last for 30-35 years. It is a fabulous Cos, but patience is required. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030." Robert Parker Wine Advocate 1999
