    Château Mouton Rothschild 1982

    Vintage & Background
The 1982 vintage in Bordeaux is widely considered one of the great years for the Médoc, and Mouton Rothschild’s rendition is often mentioned among the best. That year brought warmth and excellent ripening, producing wines of opulence, depth, and outstanding aging potential. Mouton made full use of its Cabernet-dominated vineyards to craft a wine that combined richness with structure and the promise of long-term evolution.

    Appearance & Nose
In the glass the wine shows a deep ruby-purple colour, with only slight evolution at the rim. The nose is dense and luxurious, initially offering aromas of crème de cassis, dark berries, and red cherry, layered with cedar, tobacco leaf, and notes of forest floor and exotic spice. With air, hints of cedarwood, leather, and truffle emerge, adding complexity and depth to the aromatic profile.

    Palate & Texture
On the palate the wine is powerful and full-bodied, yet surprisingly graceful given its age. Rich flavours of black fruit—blackberry, cassis—merge with more evolved notes of earth, leather, forest under-brush and spice box. There is still a firm core of structure: fine tannins, sufficient acidity to lift the palate, and a creamy texture that gives suppleness in the mid-palate. The finish is long, with lingering dark fruits, chocolate, spice and a cedar-tinged aftertaste.

    Maturity & Drinking Window
The 1982 is now very mature, in a stage where its tertiary flavours are fully in view. Bottles with excellent provenance are drinking beautifully now, though the wine still has enough backbone to offer enjoyment for many more years. The best examples will display nuance, elegance and depth—provided they’ve been stored correctly.

    Food Pairing & Serving Suggestions
Serve the wine at about 16-18 °C, ideally decanted for several hours to allow the aromas to fully open. It pairs brilliantly with rich meat dishes—roast lamb, aged beef, perhaps game with sauce—and also complements hearty stews. Aged cheeses, mushrooms, or dishes with earthy, umami textures will harmonise well.

    Verdict
Château Mouton Rothschild 1982 remains one of the benchmark Bordeaux wines of its era. It balances power and elegance, richness and structure, with a tapestry of complex flavours that reward contemplation. For lovers of mature Bordeaux—especially those who treasure the full expression of terroir, vintage, and time—this is a wine that offers both gravitas and pleasure.

    *** Robert Parker 100 points ***

This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+
