Description

Château Mouton Rothschild, 2001
Pauillac – Premier Grand Cru Classé

The 2001 vintage in Bordeaux followed the celebrated 2000, yet quietly produced wines of impressive balance, purity and ageing potential. On the Left Bank, and particularly in Pauillac, Cabernet Sauvignon achieved excellent ripeness while retaining freshness. Château Mouton Rothschild, elevated to First Growth status in 1973, is renowned not only for its powerful, opulent style but also for the distinctive artist-designed labels that mark each vintage.

The 2001 release reflects Mouton’s hallmark richness and polish, combining concentration with refinement and precision.

Tasting Notes:
Deep ruby in colour with youthful intensity, the nose is expressive and layered. Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and cassis are interwoven with notes of cedar, graphite and sweet spice. With time in the glass, hints of dark chocolate, tobacco leaf and subtle floral lift emerge. On the palate it is full-bodied yet harmonious, with finely structured tannins supporting flavours of dark berries, mocha and well-integrated oak. The finish is long, elegant and persistent, showing both power and finesse.

Serving & Food Pairing:
Best served at cellar temperature and decanted to allow the wine to fully open. A fine partner to roast lamb, beef dishes or game, as well as mature hard cheeses.

Reviews

"Lifted blackberry, autumn leaf, cedar and a touch of fresh tobacco, the mintiness enhanced by continued aeration. The palate is very tight and slightly pinched at the moment, the tannins a little harder and less fine than Lafite, the finish slightly chalky and foursquare in texture. Personally, I prefer the 2002 to the previous year, but it is still a decent, mid-weight Pauillac that would show better with cuisine. Drink 2013-2025. Tasted November 2010."
