Description
Chianti, 1977 – Barone Ricasoli
Imperial Format – 5.0 Litres with Wooden Support
The 1977 vintage in Tuscany produced traditionally structured wines, favouring balance and gradual development over immediate generosity. At the heart of Chianti’s history stands Barone Ricasoli, one of Italy’s most historic estates and widely credited with shaping the original Chianti formula in the 19th century. Wines from this era were crafted for steady ageing, with Sangiovese at their core and extended maturation in large oak casks. Presented here in an impressive 5.0 litre format, complete with its wooden cradle, this bottle reflects both the heritage of the estate and the celebratory tradition of large-format Chianti.
Tasting Notes:
Now a deep garnet hue shading to brick at the rim, the bouquet is fully evolved and complex. Aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and stewed plum are layered with notes of leather, cedarwood and tobacco. With air, subtle hints of dried herbs, balsamic nuance and gentle spice emerge. On the palate it is medium-bodied and harmonious, with softened tannins and a savoury maturity. Flavours of dried red fruits, earthy undertones and delicate oak spice unfold steadily, leading to a long, elegant and warming finish.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Given its age and format, stand upright well in advance to allow any natural sediment to settle before careful decanting. Serve at cellar temperature. A fine companion to roast beef, game dishes, mature Pecorino or traditional Tuscan fare.
Summary:
An impressive large-format Chianti from one of Tuscany’s most historic producers, the 1977 Barone Ricasoli combines classical maturity with considerable presence. A rare and striking centrepiece, offering both vinous character and visual impact for special occasions.
