Description
1985 Rocca delle Macìe, Chianti Riserva – Tuscany, Italy
A fine, mature example from one of Tuscany’s most established estates, this 1985 Chianti Riserva from Rocca delle Macìe captures the charm and balance of one of the region’s best vintages of the 1980s. Founded in 1973 by film producer Italo Zingarelli, Rocca delle Macìe quickly earned a reputation for producing expressive, classically styled Chianti wines that balance rustic authenticity with refined winemaking.
Composed primarily of Sangiovese, with small portions of Canaiolo and Colorino, the wine was aged in traditional Slavonian oak before long bottle rest.
After four decades, it shows a brick-red core fading to tawny on the rim. The bouquet is elegant and mature, offering aromas of dried cherry, leather, cedar, and balsamic herbs, underpinned by notes of tobacco, truffle, and old oak.
The palate remains graceful and savoury, with softened tannins and flavours of dried red fruit, earth, spice, and sweet wood. Acidity gives structure and life, leading to a dry, complex finish with echoes of cherry skin and herbs. A beautifully evolved Riserva that still speaks clearly of its Tuscan origin and traditional craftsmanship.
Serving Suggestions
Serve at 16–18 °C. Decant gently to remove sediment and allow the wine to breathe for 20–30 minutes before serving.
Pairs classically with roast lamb, pasta with wild mushroom ragù, or aged pecorino. Also excellent with game birds, truffle dishes, or Parmigiano-Reggiano.
