Description

The 1985 Churchill’s Vintage Port marks a significant milestone as one of the inaugural vintage releases from Churchill’s, a house founded in 1981 by Johnny Graham. Sourced from old vineyards in the Cima Corgo subregion of the Douro Valley, particularly from Quinta da Gricha, this port reflects the traditional craftsmanship and dedication to quality that Churchill’s is known for. The blend comprises classic grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinta Cão, contributing to its complexity and depth .

In its youth, the 1985 Churchill’s Vintage Port was noted for its deep, opaque color and a nose that was initially reserved. On the palate, it exhibited robust flavors with pronounced heat, sweetness, and red fruit characteristics. A hint of vegetal woodiness was observed, but overall, it was considered one of the better ports of the vintage .

As it matured, the port developed more nuanced flavors. Tasting notes from subsequent years describe a profile featuring sweet cherry cordial, kirsch, milk chocolate, red raspberries, strawberries, and potpourri. The palate became smooth and mellow, with well-integrated tannins and acidity, leading to a warm and fruity finish . Another taster noted that, after several hours of decanting, the wine revealed aromas of rhubarb and a palate of raspberries and red currant, with good acidity and tannins, culminating in a pleasant warmth on the finish .

Overall, the 1985 Churchill’s Vintage Port has been recognized for its rich and structured palate, with a firm backbone of alcohol beneath a creamy midpalate. While it may not reach the heights of some other 1985 vintage ports, it offers a refined and flavorful experience that reflects the house's commitment to quality .
