Description
The 1998 Clos de l'Oratoire is drinking beautifully now. It has a fine concentration, really good expression of ripe fruit and terroir. Lovely classic flavours and ripe Merlot fruit with a nice balance of oak.
Clos de l’Oratoire, located on Saint-Emilion's northeast slope, has 13 hectares of vines. The terroir of Fronsac molasse, consisting of a layer of sandy soil and a clay subsoil, is ideally suited to Merlot (80% of the vines).
Meticulous work is done all year long to maintain quality in the vineyard.
Fermentation takes place exclusively in temperature-controlled oak vats. Oak, a noble material in perfect synergy with fine wine, enhances its colour and flavour, and enables it to reach its full potential.
Château Clos de l'Oratoire, nestled in the prestigious Saint-Émilion appellation of Bordeaux, France, is a distinguished estate celebrated for its exceptional wines and rich history. Dating back to the 19th century, this historic property has been meticulously tended by devoted winemakers who have upheld a tradition of excellence for generations. You probably remember I am a great fan of 1998 Bordeaux, but only Right Bank and Pessac-Leognan. Well, here is another beauty and it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg! It's drinking beautifully now with very fine aromas of chocolate and beer. It's full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a juicy, succulent finish. Decanting an hour would help. (2014)

Pale to medium brick in color, the 1998 Clos de l'Oratoire has an earthy/meaty nose with a delicate core of cranberry sauce, dried mulberries, oolong tea and cigar box. Medium-bodied and elegantly styled in the mouth, the earth laced red fruits have a chewy frame and give a refreshingly savory finish. (LPB) (5/2018)
