Description
The 1880 Companhia Vinícola da Madeira Malmsey is an extraordinary piece of winemaking history, offering more than 140 years of slow, graceful maturation. Malmsey—made from the Malvasia grape—is the richest and most opulent style of Madeira, known for its luscious sweetness balanced by the island’s hallmark vibrant acidity. Produced in the late 19th century, when Madeira was prized on the grand tables of Europe and the Americas, this wine is both a rare collector’s treasure and a testament to the enduring craftsmanship of Madeira’s winemakers.
In the glass, it would display a deep, glowing mahogany core with flashes of amber and green at the rim, a visual hallmark of extreme age. The bouquet would be breathtakingly complex, with layers of molasses, treacle, and dried figs, interwoven with candied orange peel, roasted walnut, and rich dark chocolate. Notes of coffee, cinnamon, nutmeg, and antique wood would emerge with air, accompanied by the deep, savoury rancio character unique to Madeira aged for more than a century.
On the palate, the 1880 Malmsey would be sumptuously rich yet perfectly balanced, with intense flavours of raisin, date, and black treacle lifted by a mouth-cleansing acidity that gives the wine remarkable freshness despite its sweetness. Layers of caramelised citrus, honeyed nuts, and warm spice unfold slowly, supported by a silky, unctuous texture. The finish would be monumental—prolonged, warming, and endlessly layered, leaving echoes of spice, dried fruit, and sweet oak for minutes after each sip.
This is a wine to savour in the quietest of moments, served slightly cool in a tulip-shaped glass to concentrate its aromatics. It pairs magnificently with blue cheese, rich chocolate desserts, or roasted nuts, but is perhaps most thrilling on its own, enjoyed slowly as a meditation on history. The 1880 Companhia Vinícola da Madeira Malmsey is not merely a drink—it is a liquid time capsule, offering an almost indescribable glimpse into the elegance, concentration, and resilience of Madeira at its most sublime.
