Croft Vintage Port, 1966
Vintage Port
The 1966 vintage in the Douro is widely recognised as one of the great declarations of the post-war era, producing Ports of structure, purity and exceptional longevity. A warm, dry summer ensured full ripening, while careful harvesting preserved freshness and balance. At Croft, one of the oldest Port houses, the vintage yielded a wine combining power with refinement — built for extended ageing and now entering a magnificent stage of maturity.
Tasting Notes:
Now a deep amber-garnet core with tawny reflections at the rim, the nose is richly evolved and complex. Aromas of dried fig, black cherry compote and sultana are layered with notes of cedar, cigar box and polished leather. With time in the glass, hints of spice, dark chocolate and orange peel emerge, adding further depth. On the palate it remains beautifully structured, with softened tannins supporting flavours of dried dark fruits, molasses and subtle balsamic tones. The finish is long, warming and persistent, carrying both richness and remarkable poise.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Stand upright well in advance to allow sediment to settle, then decant carefully. Serve at cellar temperature in generous glasses. A distinguished companion to Stilton, dark chocolate desserts or simply savoured on its own at the close of a meal.
Summary:
A benchmark mature Vintage Port from an outstanding declared year, the 1966 Croft offers depth, harmony and the noble complexity that only decades of bottle ageing can bring. A classic example of traditional Douro craftsmanship at its most enduring.
