Description
Dom Pérignon 1990
Vintage Background
The 1990 vintage in Champagne is widely considered one of the greatest of the late 20th century. The growing season enjoyed excellent conditions, with a warm and dry summer that ripened both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes to near perfection. Yields were generous, but quality was consistently high, giving wines with both richness and balance. For Dom Pérignon, 1990 marked one of the standout releases of the house, a wine that has been highly sought after by collectors ever since.
Appearance & Nose
Now fully mature, the 1990 Dom Pérignon pours a deep golden colour with a fine, persistent mousse. The bouquet is strikingly complex, offering layers of ripe tropical fruits, honey, baked apple, and apricot compote, intertwined with toasted brioche, roasted nuts, vanilla, and hints of spice. With age, more tertiary tones have developed — notes of truffle, beeswax, smoke, and dried flowers add an extraordinary dimension to the nose.
Palate
On the palate, this vintage is renowned for its power and opulence. It is rich and expansive, yet still beautifully balanced by a line of acidity that keeps the wine lively despite its age. Flavours of candied citrus, mango, caramelised pear, and almond praline are seamlessly integrated with savoury undertones of coffee, cocoa, and earthy minerality. The mousse is creamy and refined, leading into a long, resonant finish that combines depth with elegance.
Maturity & Food Pairing
Dom Pérignon 1990 is fully mature but remains in a glorious drinking window, with the very best examples continuing to evolve positively for years to come. Provenance is crucial, as well-stored bottles still show remarkable freshness. This vintage pairs exceptionally well with luxurious dishes such as lobster thermidor, roasted quail with morels, or aged cheeses like Comté and Parmesan. Its richness and complexity also make it a superb contemplative wine on its own.
Verdict
Dom Pérignon 1990 is rightly celebrated as one of the house’s all-time great vintages. It combines power, depth, and complexity with a remarkable harmony that has stood the test of time. For collectors, it remains a benchmark example of mature prestige Champagne, and for those fortunate enough to open a bottle today, it offers a profound and unforgettable drinking experience.

Reviews "Medium lemon-straw colour. Intensely fragrant nose with aromas of jasmine, cinnamon buttered toast, stewed apples and preserved ginger. Concentrated honey-nut, warm apple tart and spice flavours fill the mouth giving ample flesh to the firm, fine structure. The bubbles are still remarkably frisky and, in harmony with the crisp backbone of acid, make for a relatively youthful, elegant and exquisitely balanced wine. Very long finish."
