Description

Gould Campbell Vintage Port 1970 is a bit of a hidden gem among vintage Ports. While Gould Campbell may not be as widely known as the likes of Taylor, Graham, or Dow, it has long enjoyed a loyal following for producing traditionally styled, full-bodied Ports with excellent ageing potential — and the 1970 vintage is no exception.

The 1970 vintage overall is considered a landmark year, producing Ports with great concentration, structure, and longevity. Gould Campbell’s 1970 fits this profile well, typically offering a deep ruby-garnet color that has softened with age. On the nose, expect rich aromas of dark cherries, raisins, dried figs, tobacco, and warm spices like clove and cinnamon. The palate is bold yet rounded, with intense fruit, integrated tannins, and a touch of mocha or licorice in the long, warming finish.

Even after more than 50 years, this Port still shows vitality when well-stored, and many bottles continue to drink beautifully. It has matured into a smooth, balanced wine with layers of flavor and gentle complexity, without losing the power and richness that defined it in its youth. As always with vintage Port of this age, careful decanting is a must — you’ll encounter sediment and possibly a fragile cork, but it’s worth the effort.
