Description
This mature Lagrein comes from Kellergenossenschaft Kurtatsch, a respected cooperative in Alto Adige known for producing characterful wines that reflect the dramatic alpine landscapes of northern Italy. Lagrein, one of the region’s most distinctive indigenous varieties, is prized for its depth of colour and robust structure. After decades of bottle ageing, this 1976 vintage shows a deep garnet-red hue with brick-toned highlights, indicative of its graceful evolution.
On the nose, the wine reveals aromas of dried blackberries, plum compote, dark chocolate, and gentle spice, layered with notes of leather, tobacco, and subtle alpine herbs. The palate is smooth and rounded, with softened tannins supporting flavours of stewed dark fruits, hints of cocoa, and a faint earthy minerality. The finish is long, warm, and harmonious, showcasing the richness and distinctive character of mature Lagrein from Alto Adige.
Decanting: Stand the bottle upright for 2–3 days prior to opening to allow any sediment to settle. Decant slowly and carefully through a fine strainer, allowing 1–2 hours of gentle aeration before serving at 16–18°C. A fragile cork is very common with older bottles, where the wine has been in prolonged contact with the cork over many decades. We therefore recommend straining any cork fragments during the decanting process.
