  • Description

The 1910 Madeira Malvasia is an extraordinary example of one of the island’s richest and most opulent styles, crafted from the Malvasia (or Malmsey) grape and matured for well over a century. Malvasia is celebrated for producing the sweetest style of Madeira, with lush, mouth-coating textures perfectly balanced by the island’s hallmark acidity. A wine from 1910—produced in the same year as the coronation of King George V—offers not just a luxurious tasting experience, but also a tangible link to the history and heritage of Madeira’s golden era.

In the glass, it shows a deep mahogany-brown core with flashes of amber and green at the rim, a signature of extreme age in fortified Madeira. The nose is profoundly aromatic and layered, opening with molasses, treacle, and dried figs, followed by waves of candied orange peel, roasted walnut, and dark chocolate. Hints of coffee, cinnamon, and polished antique wood emerge with time in the glass, joined by the complex rancio character that only develops after decades in seasoned oak casks.

On the palate, the 1910 Malvasia is sumptuous, rich, and endlessly complex. Intensely sweet flavours of raisin, date, and black treacle are lifted by a vibrant, mouth-cleansing acidity that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. Layers of caramelised citrus, nutmeg, and espresso add depth, while the texture is luxuriously unctuous yet perfectly poised. The finish is monumental—long, warming, and resonating with dried fruit, spice, and nutty elegance for minutes after each sip.

This is a wine to savour in the most special of moments, best served slightly cool in a tulip-shaped glass to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and palate weight. It pairs beautifully with rich desserts such as dark chocolate torte or pecan pie, and is sublime alongside blue cheese or roasted nuts. The 1910 Madeira Malvasia is not merely a drink—it is a century-old masterpiece, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the decadent depth and balance that only Madeira at its finest can achieve.
