Description
The 1975 Maynard’s Colheita Port is a beautifully aged single-harvest tawny, matured in seasoned oak casks for decades before bottling. Colheita Ports differ from Vintage Ports in that they spend extended time in barrel rather than bottle, developing extraordinary complexity, softness, and layered depth. This 1975 expression reflects nearly half a century of careful maturation, offering a taste of history in every glass.
In the glass, it shows a glowing amber-brown hue with olive-green tinges at the rim — a signature of long barrel aging. The nose is intensely aromatic, bursting with dried fruits, roasted nuts, orange marmalade, and hints of vanilla, old leather, and exotic spices. Oxidative aromas from cask aging are present, adding warm notes of cedar, burnt sugar, and tobacco, giving the wine a rich, expressive character.
On the palate, the wine is silky and harmonious, with a medium body and a perfectly integrated spirit. Layers of fig, walnut, caramel, and date unfold across the tongue, supported by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh despite its age. The long cask aging has polished the structure, giving a rounded, elegant mouthfeel and a lingering finish of toasted almonds and citrus zest.
Maynard’s 1975 Colheita is a superb choice for Port lovers looking for something more subtle and nuanced than a Vintage Port. It pairs beautifully with pecan tart, crème brûlée, or a good conversation after dinner. Bottled only when deemed ready by the cellar master, this is a wine meant to be savoured now — and one that speaks volumes of patience, time, and craftsmanship.
