  • Description

The Quinta da Devesa 30-Year-Old Tawny Port is a masterfully aged fortified wine that showcases the estate’s deep commitment to craftsmanship and tradition. Produced in the heart of the Douro Valley, this tawny port is made from a selection of native grape varieties—primarily Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão—that have been aged in old oak casks for an average of 30 years. The result is a tawny port of remarkable complexity, balance, and elegance.

In the glass, it displays a deep amber-brown color with golden edges, a sign of its long oxidative aging. The nose is highly expressive and layered, offering a complex bouquet of toasted almonds, dried figs, orange peel, honeycomb, molasses, baking spices, and fine oak. Hints of leather, tobacco, and antique wood add an almost nostalgic aromatic character, reflective of its extended time in barrel.

On the palate, this 30-Year-Old Tawny is silky, concentrated, and unctuous, with a rich texture and an intricate interplay between sweetness, acidity, and tertiary flavors. Notes of caramelized walnuts, toffee, spiced dates, and stewed orchard fruits are woven together with vibrant citrus peel and a faint saline minerality. Despite its age, the wine retains exceptional freshness and a long, warming finish that lingers with elegance.

This wine has received high critical acclaim, including 94 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 93 from Wine Enthusiast, and 92 from Roy Hersh (FTLOP), along with a Gold Medal at the Berliner Wine Trophy. These accolades reflect not just its pedigree but also its outstanding value among aged tawny ports.

Best served slightly chilled (12–14°C), the Devesa 30-Year-Old Tawny Port is incredibly versatile. It pairs beautifully with crème brûlée, apple tart, salted caramel desserts, nut-based pastries, or mature hard cheeses. It can also be enjoyed solo as a contemplative after-dinner drink. Once opened, the wine will retain its quality for several months if stored properly due to its oxidative style, making it both indulgent and practical.

This is a tawny port for serious enthusiasts—richly textured, deeply aromatic, and profoundly rewarding. Whether added to a connoisseur’s collection or shared to mark a special occasion, it’s a true statement of the aging potential and grace of classic Douro winemaking.

A historic vineyard, Quinta da Devesa was already included as a quality grape growing plot in the first map of the Douro Demarcated Region. The most important history of the property began in 1941 when Jose Fortunato Junior and his wife, Antonia Soares Fortunato acquired Quinta da Devesa and decided to pour their lifetime passion for port wine into the property through great investment in port and, later, dry wine production. Over seventy years later, harvests of superior quality have been kept and stored in wooden casks in the winery cellars. These are used today to produce the famed tawny and aged white port blends alongside some exceptional colheita ports dating back to 1944.

The NV 30 Year Old Tawny Porto was bottled in 2017 with a bar-top cork and 114 grams of sugar. Another complex, crisp tawny, this adds power and depth to the 20 this issue, but it is mostly along the same lines. Showing exceptional length on the finish, this lingers beautifully. This is impressive on many fronts, if you appreciate complexity more than richness.

“The 30-Year Old Porto is slightly deeper in color than the 10-Year Old. The nose is complex: balsam, dried honey, linseed and creme brûlée,wood resin scents – all mercurial and ever-changing in the glass. The palate is smooth and harmonious, slightly more viscous and honeyed than the 10-Year Old, with great weight on the finish. There are heady allspice, clove and hazelnut notes here, touches of tamarind and white pepper following later. What a lovely 30-Year Old!”

Dark gold in color, rich and on the dry side, this is a very fine wine from a family-owned quinta close to Régua. The long wood aging has introduced great concentration to the dried fruits and burnt toffee flavors. Marmalade and surprising freshness give the wine a lift. It is ready to drink now.
