Description
The Quinta da Devesa 50-Year-Old Tawny Port is the pinnacle of aged tawny from this respected Douro Valley estate—an extraordinary wine representing half a century of meticulous barrel aging and masterful blending. Crafted from traditional indigenous varieties including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão, this tawny has matured slowly in old oak casks under the watchful care of generations of winemakers. The result is a wine of remarkable depth, finesse, and historical resonance.
In the glass, the wine presents a deep amber-brown core with olive-green reflections at the rim, a visual hallmark of its exceptional age. On the nose, it delivers profound aromatic complexity, opening with layered notes of dried apricot, fig, orange marmalade, roasted walnut, and old leather. This is interwoven with balsamic accents, hints of cedar wood, aged tobacco, molasses, and warm baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Each swirl reveals another facet of its lengthy evolution in wood.
The palate is equally arresting—silky, concentrated, and utterly harmonious. There is an exquisite balance between sweetness and acidity, with flavours of toffee, burnt sugar, caramelized citrus peel, prune, almond skin, and exotic spices. The texture is rich yet incredibly refined, finishing with an endless wave of savoury-sweet persistence and a lingering note of hazelnut and spiced orange zest.
Critically, the 50-Year-Old Tawny Port from Devesa has earned its place among elite aged ports. Though less commonly rated due to its rarity, earlier aged tawnies from Devesa have consistently scored 92–94 points from Parker, Wine Enthusiast, and Roy Hersh (FTLOP). This expression stands above them all, reflecting both exceptional raw materials and patient cellar work.
Best enjoyed slightly chilled at 14–16°C, this tawny is a celebration wine—perfect for significant milestones or contemplative sipping. It pairs wonderfully with tarte tatin, almond pastries, aged Comté, crème brûlée, or even dark chocolate with sea salt. Due to its oxidative aging, it retains quality for two to three months after opening if sealed and kept in a cool place.
The Quinta da Devesa 50-Year-Old Tawny Port is not just a wine—it’s a liquid archive of Douro Valley tradition, a testament to time, and a showpiece bottle for any serious port enthusiast or collector.
