2003 Quinta do Vesúvio – Vintage Port (Douro, Portugal)
A hallmark Vesúvio from the hot ’03 vintage—sumptuous fruit wrapped in the estate’s wild-herb, schist-driven freshness. Deep opaque garnet with minimal rim fade. The nose surges with blackberry and black cherry liqueur, dark plum and cassis, threaded by violets, rock-rose (esteva), dark chocolate, liquorice, cracked pepper and a cool eucalyptus lift.
Plush and mouthfilling yet poised: sweet black fruits ride lively acidity; tannins are abundant, fine and slightly chalky—structured but polished. Notes of cocoa nib, espresso, graphite and dried orange peel roll into a long, powerful, mouthcoating finish.
Serve: 14–16 °C. Decant 2–3 hours to drop crust and open the aromatics.
Food pairing: Stilton/blue cheeses, walnut tart, high-cacao chocolate desserts, roasted nuts; also excellent solo.
Drink window: Superb now with proper air; prime drinking 2025–2040+ with long life in top cellars.

Reviews
"“Complex aromas of crushed berries, pepper and spices. Full-bodied, with medium sweetness and layers of polished tannins. Masses of berry, plum and citrus character. This single-vineyard Port is always superb.”
James Suckling, Wine Spectator, December 2005
