Description
Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Reserva 1956 – Rioja
The 1956 Monte Real Reserva from Bodegas Riojanas is a rare and evocative example of traditional Rioja, offering a window into mid-20th-century winemaking and long, patient ageing. The colour has faded to a pale garnet with deep amber and brick tones at the rim, reflecting its remarkable maturity.
The nose is delicate, complex and gently haunting. Aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and plum skin are intertwined with leather, tobacco, old wood, vanilla and coconut from long American oak ageing. Notes of forest floor, dried herbs, orange peel and soft spice add further depth and authenticity.
On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied, silky and finely balanced. The tannins are completely resolved, giving a smooth, refined texture, while flavours of dried red fruits, tea leaf, savoury spice and gentle oak sweetness unfold with clarity. The acidity, if well preserved, provides lift and keeps the wine poised despite its age.
The finish is elegant, soft and quietly persistent, leaving lingering impressions of dried fruit, leather, vanilla and subtle spice. This is a wine to appreciate slowly, for its history and finesse rather than power.
This mature Monte Real pairs beautifully with simple roast meats, grilled chicken, mushroom dishes, mild stews and aged Manchego or other semi-hard cheeses, where its delicacy and complexity can be fully appreciated.
A graceful, fully mature Rioja offering subtle complexity, balance and great emotional appeal. The 1956 Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Reserva is a wonderful example of traditional Rioja ageing with dignity, elegance and timeless charm.
