Taittinger Collection 1983 “Vieira da Silva”

    Vintage & Artist Edition Background
The 1983 vintage marks the origin year of Taittinger’s Collection Series, which pairs exceptional Champagnes with artwork from noted modern and contemporary artists. This edition is decorated with artwork by Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, a Portuguese-born French painter known for abstract, geometric brushstrokes—often evoking stained glass, architecture or fragmented landscapes. The “Vieira da Silva” bottle is part of a limited‐edition release, produced only in great vintages.

    Blend & Technical Details
This Champagne is disgorged from a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. The grapes are drawn from Grand Cru vineyards—Pinot Noir primarily from Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne, Chardonnay from the Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs. After pressing, the wine undergoes fermentation and is aged for at least five years on fine lees—a process that adds complexity and texture. The alcohol content is around 12.5%.

    Appearance & Nose
In its mature stage, the wine presents a warm colour, with golden amber hues hinting at its age and oxidative development. The nose shows layers of green apple, citrus peel, and more mature orchard fruit such as pear and baked apple. As it opens further, more secondary and tertiary aromas appear: toasted nuts (hazelnut), brioche, buttered toast, mild oxidation, and subtle mushroom or autumnal notes. There is also minerality and a subtle earthiness.

    Palate & Texture
On the palate the 1983 “Vieira da Silva” is rich and powerful yet balanced by firm acidity that holds everything together. Flavours of ripe pear and baked apple lead, followed by toasted nuts, buttered brioche, perhaps some caramel or toffee, and lingering mineral and earth undertones. The texture is creamy but not heavy, with good structure and a finish that is both lingering and elegant.

    Maturity & Drinking Window
This Champagne is now fully mature, having developed complex tertiary characteristics while retaining enough backbone to avoid complete decline. Well-stored bottles are drinking beautifully now, offering more nuanced and layered expression. It’s unlikely to improve significantly, so for most collectors and drinkers, now is an excellent time to enjoy it.

    Food Pairing & Serving Suggestions
Serve it slightly cooler than room temperature—around 10-12 °C—in a white wine or tulip glass to allow aromas to unfold. Dishes that harmonise with its maturity work best: roasted poultry, creamy sauces, nut‐based desserts, or gentle earthy flavours (mushrooms, truffle). It also makes a contemplative wine on its own—savouring each nuance.

    Overall Impression & Verdict
Taittinger’s 1983 Collection Vieira da Silva is a benchmark example of aged prestige Champagne. It brings together power and elegance, with richness of fruit, depth of secondary and tertiary notes, and a strong sense of provenance. For collectors and lovers of mature Champagne, it offers impressive complexity, character, and sensory reward.

The Taittinger Collection Series bottles are released only in great vintages, from a selection of the year's finest cuvées. The wines are made from Chardonnay mainly from the Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs, and Pinot Noir from Montagne de Reims and Vallée de la Marne vineyards. The fruit is pressed in the vineyards and the first pressing is transported to the winery for fermentation, followed by a second fermentation in the bottle. Aged for five or more years on the lees, the wine acquires complexity and the fine, pinpoint bubbles characteristic of its sparkle.

The Taittinger Collection Series was conceived in the late 1970s by Claude Taittinger. Long a patron of the arts, with a passionate interest in the modern schools of painting and sculpture, he perceived a natural alliance between the creation of the artist and the art of the great winemaker. Thus, in 1983, Champagne Taittinger introduced the first of its revolutionary Collection Series, uniting art and Champagne in the design of a special bottle with a laser-sealed sheath that visually expresses the artist’s concept of the magic of Champagne. Featuring the work of artists such as the French surrealist André Masson, American pop artist Robert Rauschenberg, and more recently the renowned Senegalese painter Amadou Sow, these exquisite bottles are commissioned well into the 21st century, and will perpetuate Champagne Taittinger’s affiliation with the greatest artists of our time.
