Description
The 1970 Taylor’s Vintage Port is one of the most celebrated Ports of the 20th century—a legendary wine from a widely declared and universally admired vintage. Renowned for its immense structure, concentration, and ageing potential, this bottling epitomizes Taylor’s house style: firm, linear, and built for the long haul. Over five decades later, it remains a benchmark for mature Vintage Port and continues to impress those lucky enough to open a well-stored bottle.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet centre with a fading amber rim, offering immediate aromatic complexity. The nose is expansive and refined, with intense notes of dried black fruits, figs, violets, and crushed raspberries, lifted by hints of tobacco, cedar, rose petal, and exotic spice. There’s a floral elegance typical of Taylor’s, wrapped in layers of age-induced nuance such as walnut, balsamic, and old leather.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful, yet the years have softened its tannins into a smooth, velvety frame. Dense flavours of black cherry, date, dark chocolate, and prune unfold gradually, supported by bright acidity and a core of savoury spice. The finish is long, layered, and harmonious—lingering with notes of liquorice, roasted almond, and spice-laced fruitcake. This is a wine of great nobility and balance, showing no sign of decline when well cellared.
Perfectly mature but still holding firm, the 1970 Taylor’s is drinking beautifully now and will continue to evolve through the 2030s. Decant gently to remove sediment and allow at least 1–2 hours for the wine to open fully. Ideal pairings include blue cheeses, dried fruits, or a quiet evening with no distractions—this is a Port that deserves full attention.
