1973 Vecchio Maniero – Marchesi di Barolo (Piedmont)

The 1973 vintage in Piedmont produced classically styled wines, favouring balance and steady development over power. Vecchio Maniero, from the historic estate of Marchesi di Barolo — whose roots trace back to the early 19th century and the formative years of modern Barolo — reflects a traditional approach to winemaking, with emphasis on structure, acidity and patient ageing.

Tasting Notes:
Now showing a mature brick-garnet hue with amber highlights at the rim, the nose is gently evolved and savoury. Aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and rose petal mingle with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With time in the glass, hints of dried herbs, cedarwood and warm spice emerge. On the palate it is medium-bodied and harmonious, with softened tannins and a lively thread of acidity that maintains freshness. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and subtle balsamic tones unfold gradually, leading to a smooth, elegant and contemplative finish.

Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. A natural partner to braised meats, mushroom dishes, truffle-infused cuisine or mature hard cheeses.
