Description
Warre’s Vintage Port 1966 is another classic from a strong declared vintage and represents the house’s elegant, understated style beautifully. The 1966 vintage overall produced structured, balanced Ports with great ageing potential, and Warre’s offering from that year has long been admired for its finesse, complexity, and gentle maturity.
By now, Warre 1966 has taken on a deep amber-tawny hue with brick-orange highlights. On the nose, it shows wonderfully evolved aromas — think dried fruits (figs, dates, and cherries), orange peel, walnuts, leather, and subtle spices like cinnamon and clove. The palate is smooth and mellow, with a refined sweetness and a silky texture. It’s not a powerful Port, but it’s persistent and layered, with a long, elegant finish that echoes notes of roasted nuts and aged wood.
True to Warre’s house character, this vintage is more about grace and aromatic complexity than sheer richness or weight. It has aged beautifully and is now fully mature — ideal for drinking. Decant gently to remove sediment, but avoid prolonged exposure to air after opening, as older Ports can fade if left too long. If stored properly, many bottles are still in great condition, but bottle variation is always a factor at this age.

There is still plenty of fresh, youthful fruit here. Medium ruby-red, with an intense floral and berry nose, medium-bodied, with rich, sweet fruit flavors, medium tannins and a lingering finish. Very good fruit. (JS, Web Only—1998)

Deep, vibrant ruby with very pale rim. Big, broad, rich nose – quite burly and autumnal. More powerful than the 1963 – with more obvious alcohol. Excellent balance again but with sweet, very direct attack. Dry, energetic finish. This is all power and bounce rather than the subtlety of the 1963. Very sweet with just a hint of something metallic. Rumbustiously sweet. Mainly from Bom Retiro in the Rio Torto. This was originally underrated and sells for much less than the 1963. Has apparently been on a plateau for years so I may well be under-estimating its longevity. (JR)18.5/20 points (9/2006)
