Description
Barbaresco 1976 – Aldo Bianco
This 1976 Barbaresco shows a pale brick-garnet colour with a broad tawny rim, fully transparent at the edges and likely carrying fine sediment — visual cues of long bottle ageing and the fragile stage of maturity typical of old Nebbiolo. The wine appears delicate yet dignified, with the last echoes of its youthful core still visible.
The nose is distinctly tertiary and perfumed, opening with dried roses, pot-pourri and autumn leaves. Classic notes of tar, leather and cigar box mingle with truffle, dried porcini and sweet spice. Hints of cherry liqueur, blood orange, balsamic tones and a whisper of menthol or anise add lift. Bottle variation is likely, but the best bottles show haunting aromatic complexity.
On the palate the wine is light to medium-bodied, graceful rather than powerful. Flavours of dried red cherry, cranberry and strawberry mingle with savoury elements — leather, cedar, forest floor and mushroom. The tannins have evolved into a fine, chalk-dry texture, while the acidity remains fresh and linear, providing the main structural spine and carrying the flavours with elegance. The impression is of transparency and nuance over density.
The finish is gentle yet persistent, lingering on dried roses, tar, spice and balsamic herb tones. This Barbaresco is fully mature and at a fragile stage, with enjoyment now dependent on storage history. Stand the bottle upright well in advance, decant lightly only to remove sediment, avoid prolonged aeration, and serve just below room temperature to highlight its perfume and delicacy.
