    Barbaresco 1976 – Mario Gaia

This mature Barbaresco shows a pale brick-garnet core shading to a wide tawny rim, fully transparent at the edges with fine sediment expected after decades in bottle. The colour and viscosity suggest a wine that is fully evolved, delicate in extract, and now centred firmly on tertiary development.

The nose is expressive yet fragile, with classic mature Nebbiolo notes of dried roses, tar and autumn leaves. Layers of leather, cigar box and sweet spices mingle with truffle, dried porcini and earthy sous-bois. Subtle traces of dried cherry, blood orange zest, balsamic lift and hints of mint or anise add complexity, though intensity will vary bottle to bottle.

On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied, refined and transparent. The remaining fruit sits in a dried red spectrum — cherry, cranberry and strawberry — wrapped in savoury flavours of cedar, tobacco leaf and mushroom. Tannins have resolved into a fine, chalky texture, while the lively acidity remains the main driver of structure, giving the wine poise and length despite its delicacy.

The finish is graceful and tapering, lingering on notes of dried flowers, tar, spice and earthy truffle. This 1976 Barbaresco is fully mature and fragile, with significant bottle variation likely; the finest bottles retain haunting perfume, while others may show oxidation or dryness. Stand upright before opening, decant gently only to remove sediment, avoid extended aeration, and serve lightly cool to best appreciate its aromatic subtlety.
