Description
1976 Giacomo Borgogno – Barolo Riserva
This wine presents a deep brick-garnet core with an expansive tawny rim, showing the translucence and sediment expected of a fully mature Barolo of this age. The colour suggests prolonged development and tertiary evolution, while still retaining a dignified core.
The nose is classic old Barolo: lifted notes of dried roses and tar intertwined with leather, cigar box and sweet spices. Secondary and tertiary tones dominate — truffle, dried porcini, menthol, iron, and balsamic hints — with vestiges of dried cherry and blood orange adding a gentle, fading fruit sweetness. Subtle iodine and herbal nuances may emerge with air.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied, elegant and resolved. The fruit profile leans to dried cherry, redcurrant and orange peel, wrapped in savoury flavours of leather, cedar and earthy mushroom. The once-formidable Nebbiolo tannins have become fine, dry and powdery, while the acidity remains vibrant, giving the wine lift and definition despite its delicacy. Texture is more about transparency and nuance than volume.
The finish is long, understated and complex, lingering on notes of dried flowers, tar, spice and balsamic herb. The wine is fully mature and bottle variation should be expected at this age; the best bottles can be hauntingly graceful, while weaker examples may show excessive oxidation or dryness. Stand upright before opening, decant gently to remove sediment with minimal aeration, and serve lightly cool to appreciate its fragrance and finesse.
