Description

The 1999 Barros Vintage Port is a mature, traditionally styled wine from a lesser-declared but quietly elegant vintage. Now over two decades old, this vintage has developed impressive tertiary character while retaining Barros’ hallmark structure and depth. Produced from a blend of high-quality grapes grown in the Douro Valley, it offers a classic expression of aged vintage port.

In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet centre fading to a brick-orange rim — a visual cue to its maturity. The nose is complex and mellow, unfolding with notes of dried black cherries, stewed plums, figs, and dark chocolate, layered with hints of cedarwood, leather, and a faint echo of eucalyptus. It’s a bouquet that speaks of time and tradition.

On the palate, it’s smooth and harmonious. The tannins have softened considerably, giving way to a mouth-coating richness with flavours of prune, dates, mocha, and spiced fruitcake. Subtle acidity lifts the wine and prevents it from feeling heavy, while the finish lingers with a warming touch of tobacco and sweet spice.
