  • Description

The founders of D’Oliveiras were visionaries that saw the true value of Madeira Wine: its ability to improve over time. D’Oliveiras is the only Madeira Wine company that owns Madeira Wine bottles and barrels from as far as the 1850’s that can still be commercially purchased. Bottled and painted by hand, this 1998 Tinta Negra Madeira has been aged for 20 years in old French oak barrels in the 17th century wine lodge in the heart of old Funchal.

This sweet Tinta Negra Madeira from D'Oliveiras displays a dark mahogany colour with golden highlights. Great depth on the nose with notes of bitter Orange chocolates, nuts, raisins and smoky wood. Once on the mouth it’s an explosive wine, covering the mouth with a sweetness quickly followed by a pronounced acidity attack that gives a great freshness and lengths of dried fruits, exotics woods and spices. The wine was vinified in a sweet way, revealing a fine and precise aroma, tempered by the strong presence of dried fruits, illuminated and seasoned by generous volatile acidity. A long, intense and spicy finish. A very rare wine.

    Store and serve advice:
This wine was naturally aged in casks and bottled in its purest state. To show it at its best serve between 13ºC and 14ºC. It must be kept in a cool and dry place. This wine has been filtered and does not need to be decanted. It was bottled ready to drink and keeps well for several months after opening.

    Serving suggestions and food pairing:
Can be thoroughly enjoyed on its own, but is also a good match with cheese and deserts - fresh tropical fruits, cakes, fruit pies, cream cakes.

Storage: Madeira wines are indestructible and have the fascinating ability to remain in excellent condition for centuries. Keep your bottle of Madeira wine upright, away from direct sunlight, and it will last forever. Once opened, a bottle of Madeira wine will remain in perfect condition for months, if not years. So, don't hurry to finish the bottle. That is, if you can resist

Deeply polished mahogany with a burnished old coppery/green tinges. Vintage marmalade aromas, fresh coffee pods, roasted walnuts, vanilla bean, dried cranberries, figs preserved in honey, ginger and fennel cake. Gloriously, unctuously syrupy sweet flow in the mouth. Sapid, clenching acidity breaks like surf through the sweetness. The nutty, smoky, savoury and balsamic flavours coast and mingle with the fruity, caramel notes. Very long sophisticated finish with superb definition and positive identity.
A taste fit for a King or Queen.
