Description

The 1966 Fonseca Vintage Port is widely celebrated as one of the finest examples of classic Port from the 20th century. Produced in a declared vintage year, this wine exemplifies Fonseca's signature style—rich, powerful, and built for longevity. Even after nearly six decades, it continues to impress connoisseurs and collectors with its complexity and vitality.

In the glass, the 1966 Fonseca typically displays a deep ruby hue with subtle garnet reflections, indicating its maturity. The nose is intensely aromatic, offering a bouquet of black cherries, plums, violets, and hints of bitter chocolate and tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, featuring layers of dark fruit, figs, and spice, all balanced by firm tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is long and harmonious, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and depth.

Critics have lauded this vintage for its exceptional balance and aging potential. John Gilman described it as "full-bodied and laser-like in its focus, with great mid-palate depth, strong acids, and excellent length and focus on the very intense finish." Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. It excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. The 1966 is a top success for that vintage and is fully mature, but will hold for 15 or more years.
