  • Description

The Quinta da Devesa 1970 White Colheita Port is an exceptionally rare and luxurious example of long-aged white port—one that offers an extraordinary tasting experience shaped by over half a century of careful maturation in seasoned oak barrels. Bottled only when the wine has reached its peak balance and expression, this Colheita was aged at the Devesa estate’s hillside cellars in the Douro Valley under ideal oxidative conditions, allowing it to develop an astonishing range of flavors and aromas while maintaining freshness.

In the glass, it displays a striking deep golden amber hue with subtle greenish olive tones, a hallmark of prolonged aging. The nose is intensely aromatic, beginning with candied orange peel, crystallized pineapple, almond brittle, and honeyed sultanas. As it evolves in the glass, more layers emerge: waxed lemon rind, dried white flowers, lanolin, antique wood polish, and hints of hazelnut, ginger, and caramelized apple. The complexity is both aromatic and textural, offering a deeply satisfying experience even before the first sip.

On the palate, the wine is silken and opulent, yet lifted by a thread of vibrant acidity that keeps it focused and elegant. Flavours of baked citrus, preserved lemon, salted toffee, vanilla pod, and spiced pear come together in perfect harmony. The oxidative aging adds further nuance, introducing tertiary notes of resin, tobacco leaf, beeswax, and almond skin. Despite the age, the mouthfeel remains surprisingly fresh, and the finish is exceptionally long—lingering with a delicate sweetness and savoury-saline tension that invites contemplation.

Awarded 93 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, this white Colheita stands as one of the most distinguished examples in its category. Devesa’s choice to bottle it after more than 50 years affirms their reputation for patience and precision in managing their aging stocks.

Serve it slightly chilled at 10–12°C in a white wine or Port glass to fully appreciate its aromatic depth and textural elegance. It pairs beautifully with aged goat cheese, foie gras, nut-based desserts, egg custards, or dried fruit tarts. For a more unexpected match, try it with seared scallops or mild blue cheese—the sweet-savoury interplay is sublime.

Thanks to its oxidative nature, once opened, the wine can be enjoyed over the course of three to four months, provided it is kept sealed and stored in a cool, dark place.

The 1970 Quinta da Devesa White Colheita Port is not just a drink—it is a piece of history, a testament to the aging potential of white ports, and a rare opportunity to savour the evolution of one harvest across decades. It is ideal for collectors, celebratory occasions, or simply for those who seek something truly profound and unique in the world of fortified wines.

The 1970 White Colheita Port is a field blend coming in with 109 grams of sugar and 21% alcohol. It was bottled with a bar-top cork in 2018. Far more interesting than the less nuanced 1969 White Colheita, this is rich and delicious with traces of caramel and a smooth finish. The 1969 may have more power, but this is far tastier and more complex. As they both continue to age in barrel (and future releases are planned), I won't be surprised if the somewhat fresher 1969 overtakes this, but at the moment, this is the one I'd buy. Reasonable minds might differ, and it is pretty close.
