Here’s a fully original, website-ready tasting note for the Sassella, 1976 — Nino Negri, including contextual information and the refined 2–3 day decanting instructions:

    Sassella, 1976 — Nino Negri

This mature Sassella comes from Nino Negri, one of Valtellina’s most historic and esteemed estates, renowned for producing elegant, age-worthy wines from Nebbiolo (locally known as Chiavennasca) grown on the steep, terraced vineyards of Sassella. The 1976 vintage displays a garnet-red colour with brick-orange highlights, reflecting nearly five decades of careful maturation.

On the nose, it reveals aromas of dried red cherries, wild berries, rose petal, gentle spice, and subtle mineral notes of slate and forest floor. The palate is refined and harmonious, with softened yet structured tannins supporting flavours of stewed cherries, hints of dried herbs, and a delicate earthy minerality. The finish is long, elegant, and balanced, highlighting the finesse, depth, and classic Sassella character of this mature Nebbiolo.

Decanting: Stand the bottle upright for 2–3 days prior to opening to allow any sediment to settle. Decant slowly and carefully through a fine strainer, allowing 1–2 hours of gentle aeration before serving at 16–18°C. A fragile cork is very common with older bottles, where the wine has been in prolonged contact with the cork over many decades. We therefore recommend straining any cork fragments during the decanting process.
