Description
Warre’s Vintage Port 1963 is one of the standout Ports from what is widely considered one of the greatest declared vintages of the 20th century. Alongside other top houses like Dow, Taylor, and Graham, Warre produced a wine of remarkable elegance, structure, and longevity. Known for its relatively lighter, more refined style, Warre’s 1963 has aged beautifully and is still considered a joy to drink over 60 years later.
In the glass, Warre 1963 typically shows a clear garnet or tawny color with brick-like edges, a testament to its long bottle ageing. The nose is refined and complex, offering layers of dried cherries, rose petals, figs, old leather, spice box, and a subtle touch of orange peel. On the palate, it's silky and graceful, with soft tannins, moderate sweetness, and flavors of dried red fruits, nuts, and mellow spice. The finish is long, elegant, and gently warming.
While Warre’s style is usually a touch less powerful than some of the more full-bodied Ports, the 1963 is admired for its balance and finesse. It’s not a blockbuster, but it’s deeply harmonious — a Port for those who appreciate aged complexity over youthful boldness. The wine has reached full maturity but continues to drink beautifully if well cellared. As always with older Ports, decant carefully and drink soon after opening.
"Extremely impressive, with beautifully balanced, harmonious sweet fruit on the palate. Medium ruby-red, ripe cherry and cassis aromas, medium-bodied, with rich, velvety fruit flavors, full, soft tannins and a powerful finish".
