Warre's Vintage Port

Warre-vintage-port
Warre’s has been leading the Port trade since it was established as the first British Port House in 1670.
Warre’s Vintage port wines combine elegance, length and balance whilst still retaining the underlying rich opulence of great Vintage Port.

This unsurpassed style is derived from the inherent characteristics of Warre’s two principal vineyards: Quinta da Cavadinha and Quinta do Retiro Antigo. They complement each other very well. Cavadinha’s location, aspect and altitude translate into a cooler ripening cycle providing the freshness, fine subtle floral aromas and ideal acidity, the latter contributing significantly to the wines’ longevity. Retiro Antigo’s location in the hotter Rio Torto Valley, combined with the fact that just over 70% of the vineyard is made up of old, mixed vines, results in wines that show great intensity, concentration and complexity. Their powerful structure also provides great staying power.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1947

Vintage Port - Plain label.

Warre’s Vintage Port 1947 is a true rarity and a fascinating piece of post-war winemaking history. Coming just two years after World War II, the 1947 vintage was declared by only a few Port houses, making it quite uncommon. Warre’s, known for its elegant and balanced style, produced a Port that has aged with grace and subtlety over nearly eight decades.

The 1947 Warre’s typically shows a deep tawny or amber color, reflecting its age and long bottle maturation. On the nose, it often reveals a complex mix of dried fruit, toasted almonds, figs, and hints of citrus peel, leather, and old wood. The palate is delicate yet persistent, with soft sweetness, mellow tannins, and a touch of spice that lingers on the finish.

Vintage Port
Exceptional Provenance

These bottles of Warre 1922 Vintage Port was taken from a house in Halifax associated with the Holdsworth family who were big in textiles at the turn of the 20th Century. The cellar has remained closed for 60 years until the new owners opened it to discover a treasure trove of wines and Ports including many bottles from 1922 and 1947. All of the Port has been undisturbed and stored in cool conditions. The colour is exceptional for wines of this era.

Tasting note
Warre’s 2017 has bright floral aromas of roses and violets, typical of the Touriga Nacional and also of rockrose, which is a feature of the Touriga Franca. On the palate the wine is full and plummy with amazing concentration and buoyant freshness delivering flavours of black cherries and blackberries. Layers of complexity are gradually revealed with a remarkable full-bodied structure.

Warre's Vintage Port, 2006

Quinta Das Cavadinha Vintage Port in presentation box

A 2006 vintage port wine. Warre’s Quinta da Cavadinha is one of the finest vineyard estates in the Douro and produces outstanding wines that are used to make Warre’s Classic Vintage Port.

Tasting Note: Very dark, almost opaque, in colour, with intense black fruit aromas, this wine is both compact and mouth-filling but at the same time, smooth and elegant. Irresistible now but with a long life ahead. of it.

In non-declared years the best of the estate’s wines are bottled as single quinta Vintage Port. These wines share the same characteristic Warre’s style, with fine elegance and lifted floral aromas, but more closely reflect the unique characteristics of the Cavadinha vineyard.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1996

Quinta da Cavadinha Vintage Port (includes box)

*** 91 Points - Robert Parker ***

Warre's Quinta da Cavadinha is one of the finest vineyards (all 'A' graded) in the Pinhao valley, one of the Upper Douro's finest Port-growing regions. In declared vintage years, the best wines from Cavadinha are used as the principal component of Warre's Vintages. In other good years a limited quantity of the Quinta's wines are set aside for bottling after two years in cask. As with true vintage port, Quinta da Cavadinha is bottled without any fining or filtration and therefore should be decanted before drinking. It will also continue to age in the bottle for at least 15 years and often much longer.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1987

Quinta da Cavadinha Vintage Port

Gold medal award - The International Wine and Spirit Competition 1999.
This Single Quinta wine has now reached its full maturity and is ready for drinking. As it ages further, it will begin to develop gently into a more tawny style wine. A fantastic glass of Port."

“A dark, glossy, red garnet-black hue - with just a tinge of maturity on the rim. A lovely nose, very open and approachable, full of toasty black fruits. On the palate it has a lovely, full richness, with delightful balance of fruit, tannins and acidity. Nicely structured. There is even a velvety edge to the texture, producing a smooth, elegant end palate and finish.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1978

Quinta da Cavadinha Vintage Port

The 1978 Warre Cavadinha is the first release from this estate after it was purchased by the Symington family in 1978. The late ripening cycle of this estate dictates the style of Cavadinha Ports; they are fresh, elegant and have very fine aromas and now form the backbone of Warre’s Vintage Port.

Old vines make up a very high proportion of the vineyard, consequently these wines are dark and concentrated, but the south easterly aspect and higher altitude results in a very elegant style. The wines from the lower vineyards that border the Pinhão River are tannic, dark purple-red and concentrated but have superb aromas of tea-rose and violets.

Vintage Port MAGNUM
In Warre's Presentation Case

Rich and highly concentrated, it has evolved into to open into a superb Port. Fragrant cassis and prunes nose, fleshy texture, loaded with ripe berry flavours, mellow tannins and a lush fruity finish. Powerful, yet impressively balanced. The 1977s have reached the middle stage of what will prove to be a long and distinguished life. Hugely enjoyable now and it will only get better.

Reviews
"This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavourful vintage port. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style.
