Oscar and Claudia Quevedo have recently declared their 2020 Quevedo Vintage port. This follows their acclaimed 2017, 2018 and 2019 vintages.

The 2020 harvest across the Douro was the smallest this century and when coupled with production and manpower issues caused by the pandemic, many producers did not declare. Those that did such as Quevedo and a few others, produced some amazing Ports that are rich, structured and deep that will mature over decades.

We first tasted this in April 2022 at the Big Fortified Tasting, It was very rich, round and thrilling. Dense and pure with a backbone and firm structure. The tannins yield to an early charm, precision and purity of fruit that becomes more evident after a few hours. An amazing long finish. This is one for keeping as it will integrate a few years. Drink 2030 - 2070.

The 2020 Vintage Port is a blend of 45% Touriga Franca, 28% Touriga Nacional, 20% Tinta Roriz and dollops of others, unoaked and coming in with just 81 grams of residual sugar. This was bottled in June 2022. Despite not being in bottle long when tasted, this showed rather well. Particularly for this vintage, it has some precision. It's not fat and fruity but rather serious and structured. The fine concentration is not at all surprising, but neither is the very ripe fruit profile. The serious tannic pop is obvious, but I did like the firm finish a lot. Overall, this is well built, serious in style and likely to develop. What's missing today is a good expression of fruit. It has to develop and develop well, coming into better balance and opening up. It is really going to need to be cellared for the rest of the decade, and that is probably not going to be enough. No matter what, you will have to like them on the very dry side. This is not exactly a sugary fruit bomb, and it is well on the stern side, a little monolithic today.

At the moment, this has plenty of potential but some things to prove too. The 2019 is probably a step up based on its fruit profile and a safer bet, now and in the long run, but they both have plenty of room for improvement. This looks like a nice achievement in the vintage. It is just going to need some time to come around. MS August 2022
