Overall, the 1966 vintage is considered largely very good, if not excellent, for much of the wine world. The year for Port, however, was fantastic and most major houses declared the vintage making it one of the best buys from the year – and it is likely to still be drinking well today. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 60 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

Bordeaux: 1966 was a very good wine vintage for Bordeaux. At the time the wines were tannic and had high acidity. Over the past four decades, the tannins have faded to make the wines more drinkable. The best quality wines such as Latour and Palmer are still in their prime even now and will remain so for many years to come. Other Bordeaux wines will remain good to drink.

Italian: 1966 produced a good vintage for Italian wines from Piedmont and Tuscany. Quality Italian reds such as Barolo and Brunello are still drinking well today.

Portugal: Making the perfect wine gift for anniversaries or birthdays, 1966 is an outstanding Port vintage of exceptional quality that was generally declared. Always overshadowed by the legendary 1963, this year is now recognised as being one of the very best post-war Vintage Ports. The wines are characterised by being long lasting with firm, perfect weight and balance. Most will outlast their 1963 counterparts and turn out greater in the long run.

    Chateau Latour, 1966

    Pauillac, 1er Grand Cru Classe

    *** 96 Points Robert Parker ***
    *** 95 Points Wine Journal ***

    Reviews
"The wine of the vintage, the 1966 Latour is a classic, old style Bordeaux that has required decades to become drinkable. A dark, opaque garnet color is followed by a fabulous nose of cedar, sweet leather, black fruits, prunes, and roasted walnuts, refreshing underlying acidity, sweet but noticeable tannin, and a spicy finish. This powerful, vigorous, immensely impressive, concentrated Latour has reached its plateau of maturity, where it will remain for another 10-20 years.

"The Latour ’66 remains one of the great wines of the vintage.

    Chateau Malescot St-Exupery, 1966

    Margaux 3me Cru Classe

The 1966 Château Malescot St. Exupéry is a well-aged Third Growth Margaux, showcasing the depth and complexity that comes with nearly 60 years of maturation. The 1966 Bordeaux vintage was highly regarded for its structured and long-lived wines, and this Margaux estate has produced a wine that remains intriguing for those who appreciate mature Bordeaux.

With a garnet hue and subtle bricking, this vintage offers a layered bouquet of forest floor, smoke, leather, and cigar box, alongside faint vegetal and caramel hints. On the palate, the wine maintains refined elegance, though it has moved fully into its tertiary phase, making it a fascinating experience for collectors and enthusiasts of aged Bordeaux.

    Chateau Montrose, 1966

    St Estephe 2eme Cru Classe

Reviews: "The 1966 is still dark ruby with a peppery, very spice, yet tight, relatively closed bouquet. The wine is austere and tough on the palate, with good fruit and firm, rough tannins. Comparatively, it is not as massive or as rich as the 1970, 1964, or 1961, but is still backward and austere" PArker Wine Advocate 1996

About Chateau Montrose Château Montrose, an illustrious wine estate located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its exceptional wines and storied history. Classified as a Second Growth in the prestigious Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, Château Montrose has long been celebrated for its commitment to quality and tradition.

    Chateau Palmer, 1966

    Margaux 3rd Growth Classification

1966 Château Palmer is a beautifully mature Margaux from one of the classic post-war Bordeaux vintages. Nearly six decades on, it has evolved into a wine of striking finesse and nuance, where Palmer’s trademark perfume, silky texture and understated power come through with remarkable grace.

In the glass, it shows a pale brick-garnet colour with a broad, amber-tinged rim. The bouquet is haunting and complex: dried raspberry and redcurrant, cedar and cigar box, intertwined with notes of rose petal, violets, leather and forest floor. Subtle hints of truffle, dried herbs and sweet spice emerge with time in the glass, giving a layered and constantly shifting aroma profile.

    Margaux 2nd Growth Classification

The 1966 Château Rauzan-Ségla from Margaux is a distinguished vintage from this historic Second Growth estate, offering a glimpse into Bordeaux's traditional winemaking style. Coming from a structured vintage, it reflects both the strength of the terroir and the classic character of mid-20th century Left Bank wines.

In the glass, the 1966 Rauzan-Ségla typically shows a mature garnet core with a fading brick rim, indicating its age. Aromas are often layered and nuanced—dried red berries, cigar box, forest floor, cedar, and subtle floral hints are all possible. On the palate, the wine is refined and soft, with the tannins fully resolved and the acidity lending freshness to a smooth, delicate finish.

Their color changes from intense garnet-purple in the early years to ruby after some cellaring. These wines are structured, with powerful and complex aromas of ripe fruit, mushrooms, truffles, underbrush, spicy notes, and wild animals.

    Cotes du Rhone, 1966

    Blaceret Selection Beaujolaise

Côtes du Rhône is a huge appellation in the south of France encompassing 40,300 ha. Plenty of white and rosé wine is produced in Côtes du Rhône but there can be no doubt that red is king. Usually Grenache will dominate the blend (except in the north where Syrah is allowed to be top dog, but these wines are relatively few) and is normally partnered with Syrah and/or Mourvèdre but a further 18 varieties are also permitted! A cheerful example might be light, soft, fruity and easy-drinking, while the finest examples may be full-bodied, concentrated, intense, spicy and ageworthy. But what they all invariably have in common is a fabulous sense of place and lashings of personality and character.

    Croft Port, 1966

    Vintage Port
    Unlabelled | Embossed Plastic Capsules

Tasting Notes: A slightly deeper core compared to the ’63. The nose is very ripe with mulberry and tobacco with a hint of balsam, just lacking a little freshness and delineation. The palate is similar to the ’63, very well-balanced and cohesive, a slightly viscous texture, fresh and surfeit with joie-de-vivre and vivacity. Wild strawberry, lemongrass and fig towards the finish, this is certainly the “dark horse” of the decade and in my humble opinion, superior to the ’63. A little gem. Tasted November 2007. D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1966

    Verdelho Madeira

D’Oliveira Verdelho Madeira 1966 is a stunning example of the age-worthy magic of Madeira and a benchmark for the Verdelho style. Produced by Pereira d’Oliveira, one of the most revered and traditional houses on the island, this wine was aged in old oak casks in their Funchal lodges for decades before bottling — a slow, oxidative ageing process that concentrates the wine’s flavors while maintaining remarkable freshness and balance.

Verdelho sits stylistically between the drier Sercial and the sweeter Bual and Malmsey styles, offering a medium-dry profile that is both vibrant and complex. By the time the 1966 vintage was bottled (often in the early 2000s), the wine had developed a deep amber hue with greenish tinges at the rim.
