Vintage Summary and Recommendations: Welcome to Vintage Wine and Port’s 2001 wine page. Read on for our summary of the vintage, our top recommendations and region reports, or scroll down to explore all available wines.
The 2001 vintage was a strong and consistent year across both the Old and New World, producing a wide range of high-quality wines. In Bordeaux, the vintage delivered elegant, approachable reds with good balance, while regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont in Italy produced structured wines now entering a fine drinking window. In the New World, countries including Australia and California produced ripe, fruit-forward wines that have matured well and are drinking beautifully today. In key regions such as Portugal and Bordeaux, well-stored wines from 2001 now offer excellent drinking. In Portugal, aged Tawny and Single Harvest (Colheita) Ports from this vintage are showing particularly well, making them a reliable and rewarding choice for a 25th anniversary or birthday gift.

France: 2001 was a classically styled vintage in France, led by Bordeaux, where the best wines are now fully mature and drinking with elegance and balance.

In Bordeaux, the wines are medium-bodied and structured rather than powerful, with the best examples — particularly from the Left Bank — now showing fully mature characteristics. Expect notes of cassis, cedar and spice, alongside softened tannins and balanced acidity. These wines are drinking well today and offer excellent value compared to more celebrated vintages.
Sauternes also performed well in 2001, producing rich yet balanced wines with both sweetness and freshness. These wines show excellent ageing potential, with many now offering complex flavours of honey, apricot and marmalade while retaining lift and structure.
In Burgundy, the vintage was more variable but still capable of producing attractive wines. The style is generally lighter and more elegant, with fresh acidity and refined red fruit character. Many are now fully mature and best enjoyed for their finesse rather than power.
Italian: 2001 was an outstanding vintage in Italy, particularly in Piedmont, where it represents one of the finest releases of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The 2001 Italian vintage caps off a remarkable run of high-quality vintages in Piedmont that began in 1996. Over this period, producers made significant advances both in the vineyard and the cellar, refining their approach and gaining a deeper understanding of Nebbiolo. This growing confidence and experience is clearly reflected in the quality of the wines.
The vintage itself provided near-ideal conditions for Nebbiolo, with warm daytime temperatures balanced by cool nights. This diurnal variation allowed for slow, even ripening, preserving acidity while developing depth and complexity in the fruit.
In Barolo, 2001 is widely regarded as the most complete and consistent vintage of this period. The wines show excellent structure, concentration and balance, with firm but refined tannins supporting layers of dark fruit, spice and earthy complexity. Many are now entering a superb drinking window, while the best examples will continue to age gracefully for years to come.
Portugal: 2001 was a good vintage in Portugal, producing well-structured Ports that are now drinking very well.

The 2001 Port vintage followed closely on from the widely declared 2000 vintage and, as a result, was not generally declared by the major houses. However, this should not detract from the overall quality of the wines produced, with many showing excellent structure, depth and balance.
The vintage conditions allowed for the production of dark, well-structured Ports with good concentration and firm tannins. In particular, a number of outstanding Single Quinta Vintage Ports were released, offering excellent value and character compared to fully declared vintages.
Now with over two decades of ageing, many 2001 Ports are drinking beautifully, with softened tannins and developed flavours of dried fruit, spice and chocolate. These wines provide a reliable and rewarding choice for a 25th anniversary or special occasion.

POLEY PALO CORTADO "En Rama"
Montilla-Moriles 25 Year Old
50cl Bottle
93 Points - Robert Parker 's Wine Advocate
Palo Cortado is a rare type of "sherry-style" wine that is initially aged under flor to become a fino or amontillado, but inexplicably loses its veil of flor and begins aging oxidatively as an oloroso. The result is a wine with some of the richness of oloroso and some of the crispness of amontillado.
Tasting Notes Amber colour with copper and greenish reflections. Very intense aroma with tobacco leaves, wood and spices like pepper and clove aromas, notes of citrus peel and fine pastries. Nuts like walnut or hazelnut nuances. On the palate it is dry, but mouth-filling, well-defined acidity that disappears to leave room for a saline sensation. …

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 2001
Vintage Port
Presented in Luxurious Quinta Do Noval gift Box
99 Points - Wine Spectator
98 Points - Wine Enthusiast
98/100 - Tom Cannavan
The 2001 Vintage Port Nacional is a late release, declared in 2003. Christian Seely, Owner of Quinta do Noval said that "The 2001 was extremely backward and quite closed up, dense and very tannic. Since we had just declared and released the 2000 Nacional, we decided to lay down the 250 cases of Nacional 2001. The late release has certainly tamed this. It still feels very firm and has a real backbone, but it is not overly drying and it is a lot more approachable than newly-released Nacionals can be.
Q. Do Noval Director Christian Seeley :
“Although we declared Quinta do Noval Nacional 2001 officially in 2003, we did not release the wine for sale at the time. …

Quinta do Vesuvio, 2001
Vintage Port
The 2001 Quinta do Vesuvio is a very dark ruby colour. The Touriga Nacional’s tiny yields brought great concentration to the wine, while the Touriga Franca, due to the good weather during the harvest, achieved perfect ripening, creating wines of great elegance. The Tinta Barroca was very ripe at the time of picking, with a higher than average baumé, producing wines of excellent structure and ageing potential. The old plantings of Tinta Roriz had lower than normal yields in 2001, giving wines with a typical concentration of berry fruit aromas.
